Ok, you haven’t studied architecture, but you do have taste, and you know when something is attractive. Before you dismiss the idea as something out of your competency, read on, this might be a great experience for you.

Do you have any artistic ability? If so this would be a good chance to put your talents to use. Don’t worry too much about the dimensions and specifications; just try to get your sketch down. A pencil sketch is good enough to get your concept across, but color will really bring your idea to life. Your design must be realistic, taking into account the amount of space you have, and your budget.

If you want to try designing an actual plan, you will need some guidance, but don’t be afraid to go it alone at first. Look at some floor plans to get an idea of what is involved. Remember, you just need to get your basic idea down; any mistakes can be corrected later. Aside from pencils, be sure to have a ruler, eraser, and a few sheets of cartridge paper.

Now that you have your rough sketch down, it’s time to bring in a professional. At this point you will tweak the design, taking out what is unrealistic, and refining other areas. As much as possible, the end result should reflect your vision.

If you’re among the group who finds that nobody has exactly been clamoring to see your artwork, don’t worry. You can still look at existing plans or designs and work with your architect to use some parts as inspiration for your home.

There are also websites, which offer floor plan templates that you can customize to your liking. Keep in mind though that this feature is usually offered with the understanding that you will use that company’s services when it is time to build.

Ask for help from family and friends too, you never know where you will find a good idea. The bottom line is, you will end up with a home that you had a hand in creating. How’s that for a worthwhile experience? After all, why call it a ‘dream home’ if it’s not the home you dream of?

It doesn’t have to be pretty, just functional.

If you are low on ideas, by a few gardening magazines. They provide an easy way to get information and show pictures that may give you some ideas for your own project.

To save money, do not buy the most expensive items in the Spring.
